MORE INFO

  • Rock-rose plants, Cistus ladaniferus, naturally exude a sticky, very fragrant resin, or gum, called Labdanum, that covers all its aerial parts, leaves, twigs, and branches.
  • The term “Labdanum” refers specifically to the Resin of Rock rose, (aka Cistus, Cistus ladaniferus) and subsequently to its different extracts.
  • Rock rose (aka Cistus) refers both to the plant Cistus ladaniferus, to its aerial parts (leaves…) and subsequently to their extracts:  essential oil and hydrosol.
  • Several highly aromatic extracts are produced from the Cistus ladaniferus (rock rose) plant.
  • Different processes are followed to obtain the different extracts from rock rose:
  • Leaves, twigs and sometimes flowers are harvested when the plant is at its peak of resin (labdanum) production (flowering season). All its aerial parts covered with labdanum, are brought to the distilleries, in bundles, to be processed.
  • Some bundles are reserved to produce the Rock rose or Cistus essential oil: this the true essential oil of rockrose, obtained by direct steam- distillation of its aerial parts, the traditional way. The result is a fluid essential oil, yellow green to pale amber in colour, extremely aromatic with resinous undertones.
  • Other bundles are processed to specifically extract the oleoresin or labdanum. All Aerial parts are first plunged in boiling water, to separate the sticky and viscous oleoresin from other vegetal matters. The melted resin rises and floats on the water surface and is then collected and referred to as Labdanum oleoresin.
  • The Labdanum oleoresin is steam or hydro distilled, to obtain the wonderful warm resinous Labdanum essential oil (THIS PRODUCT)
  • The highly fragrant, Labdanum absolute is the concentrated, sticky, viscous somewhat gummy, dark-brown extract obtained by solvent extraction, from the Labdanum oleoresin.
