MORE INFORMATION

Focus on chamazulene

This molecule of the sesquiterpene family, present in the essential oils of German Chamomile, (Matricaria recutita) and Blue Tansy is responsible for their characteristic, beautiful, deep-blue color, and gives them their super anti-allergic properties. Chamazulene is present in the Blue Tansy at high levels (up to 30%, compared to 5% in German chamomile).

Blue Tansy, Tanacetum annum, is an annual plant and flowers once a year under good weather conditions. Its steam distilled essential oil is the one used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and perfumery. It has high level of chamazulene compounds, responsible its specialized overall soothing properties. Very antihistamine, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory, it is used in the support of allergic and/or itchy conditions. Blue Tansy essential oil contains no thujone molecules. This is a highly seasonal / availability-dependant essential oil, which make it scarce and precious.

The Common tansy, Tanacetum vulgare syn. Chrysanthemum vulgare, is a perennial plant that produces decorative yellow flowers all year round. Its essential oil is not used in aromatherapy nor in natural cosmetics. Common tansy plant is used, amongst other industrial applications, in gardens (slurry, spray) as a natural anti-fungal, pest control and insect repellent, and as a companion-plant, in fruits, flowers (roses) and vegetable gardens. Common tansy produces a clear essential oil (no chamazulene) that contains thujone and is considered dangerous (potentially neurotoxic and abortive). It is used in the making of certain bitter liqueurs but the thujone molecules must be removed before incorporation
