Description

Rediscover the ancient "Herb of Clarity." Our Organic Calamus Root Oil (Acorus calamus) is distilled from the rhizomes of the Sweet Flag plant.

Known in Ayurveda as Vacha (meaning "speech"), it has been revered for thousands of years by sages and herbalists to sharpen the mind and detoxify the body.

The Aroma: Despite growing in swamps, it has a surprisingly warm, spicy, and woody-sweet aroma that is grounding and comforting.

Key Benefits & Uses:

The "Brain Tonic" (Focus & Clarity): This is its most celebrated traditional use. Calamus is a powerful nervine stimulant. It is traditionally used to clear "mental fog," sharpen focus, improve memory, and stimulate the mind during times of fatigue or exhaustion.

Potent Digestive Aid: It is one of the most effective carminatives in herbalism. A gentle abdominal massage (heavily diluted) is traditionally used to warm the stomach, stimulate appetite, and relieve gas, bloating, indigestion, and colics.

Respiratory Support: Its spicy, warming nature makes it a useful expectorant for clearing "cold" conditions, such as congestion and coughs.

Nervous System Balancer: Uniquely, it is both stimulating and grounding. It helps to steady the nerves during times of shock or nervous tension.

CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING:

This oil contains beta-asarone.

Toxic in high doses. Use only in very low dilutions (max 0.5%).

Do NOT use specifically during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do NOT ingest. For external aromatherapy use only.

Not recommended for children.

SAFE USAGE & REGULATORY GUIDELINES NOTES

Botanical Name: Acorus calamus L.

Origin / Chemotype: Indian (Tetraploid)

Key Naturally Occurring Constituents: Combined - and -Asarones (~91%)

Because authentic Indian Calamus Root Oil naturally contains high levels of -asarone, it is governed by strict international safety thresholds. Please adhere to the following recommended maximum usage levels in your recipes and synergies:

1. Maximum Dermal Use Levels (Topical & Perfumery)

  • IFRA / EU Cosmetic Maximum: 0.01% (approx. 1 drop per 500 ml of carrier oil or perfume base).
    • Required for any commercial retail cosmetics, leave-on body oils, or fine fragrances.
  • Aromatherapy Dermal Maximum (Tisserand & Young):0.2% (approx. 1 to 2 drops per 30 ml of carrier base).
    • Recommended strictly for episodic, localized aromatherapy or olfactotherapy sessions under practitioner guidance.
  • Oral & Lip Care: Prohibited. Do not use in lip balms, lipsticks, toothpastes, or oral care products.

2. Practical Tip: Make a Pre-Dilution

Due to its potency and low dermal recommended ceiling, do not add the pure (neat) calamus oil directly into small bottles.

  • Create a 1% stock dilution (e.g., 1 g Calamus Oil in 99 g Perfumer’s Alcohol or Jojoba Oil).
  • Use small drops of this 1% dilution to easily and safely dose your final perfume concentrates or massage bases.

3. Olfactotherapy & Inhalation

  • Aroma Inhaler Sticks / Scent Strips: Dermal limits do not apply to dry vapor inhalation. You may apply 1–2 drops directly onto a cotton inhaler wick or blotter strip for breathwork, grounding, and focus.
  • Diffusers: Use sparingly (1 drop blended with grounding oils like Frankincense, Sweet Orange, or Cedarwood).

4. Safety & Contraindications

  • Strictly for external / aromatic use only. Never ingest.
  • Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Do not use on infants, children, or broken/damaged skin.
  • Always conduct a patch test prior to full topical application.

SAFE BLENDING/ SYNERGIES RECIPE EXAMPLES:

Here are three distinct, balanced formulation recipes using this high-asarone Indian Calamus Root Oil, calibrated to comply with IFRA and aromatherapy safety standards.

Stock Solution Prerequisite:

Prepare a 1% predilution of your Calamus Root Oil (1 drop Calamus + 99 drops of 96% perfumer's base or Jojoba oil). This allows precise, safe dosing without exceeding the IFRA ceiling.

1.Fine Fragrance: "Terra Sancta" (Eau de Parfum - 50 ml)

A warm, meditative woody-amber chypre where calamus acts as a tenacious earthy-leather fixative.

  • Base: 42.5 g Perfumer's Base + 7.5 g Fragrance Concentrate (15% EdP concentration).
  • Aromatic Concentrate ingredients:
    • 25 drops (~0.75 g) Bergamot FCF (Citrus bergamia) Crisp, sunlit citrus opening
    • 15 drops (~0.45 g)  Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) Fruity, uplifting brightness
    • 20 drops (~0.60 g) Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) Resinous, meditative clarity
    • 6 drops (~0.18 g) Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) Aromatic, warm spice bridge
    • 12 drops (~0.36 g)  Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) Deep, dark damp-earth anchor
    • 18 drops (~0.54 g)  Cedarwood Dry, clean wood
    • 10 drops Calamus Root 1% Predilution in Alcohol (~0.25 g of the 1% solution) as the Fixative, Roots the base with warm, spicy-leather undertones

Compliance Level: 0.01% calamus oil in finished product (fully IFRA compliant).

Method: Combine all essential oils and the calamus 1% predilution in a 10ml amber glass bottle. Swirl gently and let the concentrate age for 48 hours. Add the perfumer’s alcohol, seal tightly, and allow to mature in a cool, dark place for 3 to 4 weeks before chilling and filtering.

2. Grounding Massage & Body Oil: "Root & Spine" (100 ml)

Designed for restorative bodywork, nervous exhaustion, or grounding anxious tension.

Carrier Base: 70 ml Jojoba Oil + 30 ml Plum Kernel or Sweet Almond Oil.

Essential oils:

  • 12 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) Soothes breathing, eases muscle constriction
    • 8 drops Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana)     Calms nervous spasms and muscular tension
    • 10 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Balances nervous system
    • 1 drop only (or 20 drops of 5% predilution) Calamus Root Oil (Neat)     Warm, grounding Ayurvedic Vacha energetic anchor
    • 6 drops Vitamin E (Tocopherol) Antioxidant protection for the carrier oils

Safety Standard: Calibrated at ~0.05% Calamus oil concentration (well under 0.2% safe aromatherapy limits; ideal for localized neck/shoulder or spinal massage).

Method: Add carrier oils to a 100 ml amber glass pump bottle. Carefully add 1 single drop of neat calamus oil (or use pre-diluted to avoid over-pouring). Add the remaining oils and vitamin E. Shake gently before each use.

Directions: Warm 4–6 pumps between palms and massage into the lower back, neck, shoulders, or soles of the feet. Avoid during pregnancy or lactation.

3. Olfactotherapy Diffuser Blend: "Clarity & Presence" (Master Blend Bottle)

A direct aromatic master blend for ultrasonic diffusers, personal aroma inhalers, or scent blotters. Since no dermal contact occurs, IFRA dermal caps do not apply, but doses remain low to prevent olfactory fatigue.

In a 5 ml amber bottle add together:

  • 20 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) Elevates mood, opens airways, anchors the mind
  • 15 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)         mental boost and combat fatigue
  • 10 drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. cineole)      Enhances alertness
  • 3 drops Calamus Root Oil (Neat)          Ayurvedic 'mind-clearing' (Vacha)

Label and date your blend

  • To Use in an Ultrasonic Diffuser: Add 3 to 5 drops of your clarity blend to the water reservoir (150–200 ml) . Run for 20–30-minute intervals in well-ventilated rooms.
  • To Use in a Personal Inhaler Stick: Apply 8 to 10 drops of the master blend directly onto the inner cotton wick, seal the bottom cap, and inhale deeply through each nostril during meditation or breathwork sessions.
