MORE INFO

Chaulmoogra oil is an ancestral oil, mentioned in the traditional Chinese and Indian pharmacopeia books (Ayurvedic texts) and used for millions of years in various skin infections and ulcerations (scabies, leprosy…)

For years, before the discoveries of sulfones and antibiotics drugs in the 1930-40’s, Chaulmoogra oil was one of the treatments tried for leprosy (Hansen's disease). Nowadays, this dreaded but curable disease, is monitored worldwide and managed successfully via multidrug therapies (MTD/WHO).

Chaulmoogra is a general Sanskrit name, given to oils extracted from closely related species of trees, that all belong to the family of Flacourtiaceae (or Achariaceae) and grow in Asia (India, Burma, Bangladesh, China…). Their oils are all referred to as “chaulmoogra” oil. Scientific research have established that the oil used in the treatment of various skin ailments, the “true” chaulmoogra oil, is the one extracted from Hydnocarpus wightianus.

  • Chaulmoogra oil is very rich in hydnocarpic acid, chaulmoogric acid and gorlic acids, 3 rare cyclic fatty acids with strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, reported as useful in cases of skin afflictions.
  • Chaulmoogra oil also contains monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid), polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid, palmitoleic acid), saturated fatty acids (palmitic, myristic, stearic acids) and a lot of phytosqualane, that have reported nourishing, balancing, repairing, and calming effects on inflamed and irritated skins.
  • Its powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties are reported to be beneficial to the care of various bacterial or mycoses-related skin problems, to help purify, reduce inflammations, and promote healthy healing. Chaulmoogra oil is recommended for acne and blemishes prone skins, to purify and help restore a more balanced and healthy sebum production. Chaulmoogra oil is non comedogenic and can be used on oily or combination types of skins.
  • Chaulmoogra oil soothing, calming, restorative anti-inflammatory properties are recommended for very dry, inflamed, or atopic, squamous, and damaged types of skins, when they may become fragilized and run a higher risk of infection. Chaulmoogra has been used in cases of Scabies, Eczema, Psoriasis, or as a support following up chemical treatments with skin-drying, desquamation, minor burns, or irritation sores side-effects (Acne drugs, chemical treatments...)
  • Chaulmoogra oil anti-inflammatory properties are put to use in traditional massages balms and oils, to help ease rheumatisms and joints discomforts
  • Chaulmoogra oil rich active molecules have found new applications in compositions that help restore an even skin pigmentation (depigmentation spots, white patches, and spots…) Chaulmoogra oil is also present in many natural after-sun care to help prolong and harmonize skin tans.
  • Chaulmoogra oil lipolytic properties are applied to cellulite massages and included in orange-peel skincare.
  • Chaulmoogra oil is mainly used in aromatherapy as a carrier oil for essential oils, in synergies for muscles and joint pains, in anti-cellulite body oils, and in acne- related purifying and soothing applications.
