  • Scientific Name: Humulus lupulus L.

  • Family: Cannabaceae

  • Plant Description: A perennial dioecious vine-like herb with lobed leaves and yellow-green female flowers (“cones”) containing lupulin resin glands.

  • Habitat: Grown in temperate climates across Europe and other countries; cultivated since the 8th century in Germany for beer production.

  • Parts Used: Dried female inflorescence (hop cone).

  • Flavonoids: Rutoside, quercitroside

  • Flavanones: 8-prenylnaringenin (hopein), 6-prenylnaringenin

  • Chalcones: Xanthohumol, isoxanthohumol

  • Essential Oils: Beta-myrcene, humulene, caryophyllene

  • Oleo-resins: Lupulone, humulone (responsible for bitterness)


Dosage & Safety

  • Typical Dose: 100–400 mg hops extract per capsule; sometimes combined with valerian root for enhanced calming effects.

  • Safe Use: Up to 300 mg/day for 3 months has been reported as safe.

  • Precautions:

    • Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    • Consult a healthcare professional if you are taking sedatives, undergoing hormone therapy, or have a history of hormone-dependent cancers (such as breast cancer).

    • May be contraindicated in mastosis or estrogen-sensitive conditions.
