More info:
Ravintsara, Ho-Wood and Camphor essential oils all come from the same plant, namely Cinnamomum camphora, the Camphor tree.
Depending on where the Camphor tree grows (or any plant species, really), it develops specific biochemical characteristic (called chemotypes) proper to insure its survival, defences, and reproduction in that environment.
Ravintsara – meaning “the leaf that is good for you”- is the name given by the people of Madagascar to their Camphor tree. Originating from Asia and introduced to Madagascar, it has adapted, and developed its own specific biochemical composition. Ravintsara essential oils, distilled from the leaves, is high in cineole (1.8 cineole (eucalyptol) and has no camphor.
(Camphor oil comes from Vietnam and is high in camphor, while Ho-wood grows in china and its essential oil is high in linalool)
