Named after the legendary hero Achilles, who was said to carry the herb onto ancient battlefields to care for his soldiers, Yarrow has held an honoured place in European herbalism for centuries.

While the wild flowers bloom in delicate shades of white, steam distillation activates matricin within the blossoms, naturally creating the deep sapphire compound known as chamazulene.

The result is a beautiful deep-blue essential oil with a sweet, herbaceous, and softly fruity-woody aroma that feels instantly centering.

Blue Yarrow is a wonderful reviving, cooling and restoring essential oil to have on hand—ideal for toning congested legs, rubbing tired muscles/ joint and calming spasms, it is a regenerating gem for irritated and blemish-prone skins.

Yarrow essential oil is also a champion at boosting the repair of scars and bruise tissues.

Because of its striking blue appearance, it is often compared to Blue Tansy, German Chamomile and Cape Chamomile essential oils.

Blue Yarrow essential oil stands apart with its unique clarifying properties, crisp verdant character, and remarkable soothing power.

IN PERFUMERY

How Natural Perfumers use blue yarrow essential oil: Blue yarrow can bridge the gap between bright top notes and heavy base fixatives. It has a powerful herbal aroma and is used sparingly*, as a specialty material, and modifier rather than a primary note:

  • To Build Modern Fougère & Herbal Accords: In green, rustic, or forest-floor perfumes, to add an authentic, wild, crushed dry weed and sun-baked meadow nuance. With lavender, clary sage, oakmoss, galbanum, and bergamot.
  • To Cutt Floral and Sweetness: If a floral bouquet (like rose geranium, jasmine, or rose) or a rich, resinous or vanilla base becomes overly powerful, a mini dose of blue yarrow tempers that edge and adds natural complexity and sophistication.
  • In Earthy, moist dark-earth (“Peaty”) and Leather bottom Notes and Accords

Because of its camphor dryness, perfumers sometimes blend Blue Yarrow with vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, and cistus to create dry leather or "botanical smoke" accords.

(*) Pre-dilute 1% or 5% in perfumer’s alcohol first (or jojoba oil). Add the pre-diluted juice drop-by-drop after in your blend (A standard undiluted drop can easily turn a delicate perfume recipe into an apothecary liniment!)

Please note:

  • Colour Transfer: In transparent perfumes or light oil-based roll-ons, even a tiny quantity will turn the juice pale blue to deep aquamarine/teal. As a Natural Perfumer, you either embrace this hue as a natural visual feature, or you must dose Blue Yarrow low enough to prevent staining skin and clothes.
  • The Yarrow blue colour in a spray or perfume, can temporarily stain or discolour white or light-coloured linens, but it will not permanently damage the fabric fibres if washed correctly.
  • It is Safe to use on Dark or Patterned Linens: The blue mist will be completely invisible. It can leave faint blue, green, or yellowish spots if sprayed too closely on White or Light Linens.
  • If you make a perfume or a room spray, Mist from a Distance: Spray  30 cm to 45 cm away from sheets or curtains. This allows the alcohol mist to atomise completely so no heavy droplets land on fabric.
  • If a Stain Happens: Do not panic. Chamazulene is highly sensitive to light and oxygen. The blue spot will naturally fade on its own over a few days, or it will wash right out in a standard laundry cycle with regular detergent.

Room & Pillow Spray (Alcohol-Based)- 60ml (100ml bottle with spray)

  • 40 ml high-proof Perfumer's Alcohol (Base)
  • 12 drops Bergamot, sweet orange or Grapefruit essential oil (top note):to lift up Blue Yarrow
  • 8 drops Blue Yarrow (Middle Note): for a sweet, chamomile grounding
  • 5 drops Cedarwood or Frankincense (Base Note): to make the scent last on fabrics
  • 20 ml Water or hydrosol

Instructions: Mix the oils into the alcohol first, shake well, then add the water/hydrosol.

" Blue Ocean Mist" Eau de Parfum (Alcohol-Based)- 30ml

For a traditional spray perfume. It will show off the true, vibrant blue colour beautifully in a clear glass bottle.

A Note on the Colour: If you use a clear glass bottle, the eau de parfum will look like clear ocean water. Over the coming months, as the perfume ages and matures (called maceration), the scent will become smoother and less sharp, and the colour may slowly shift to a beautiful calmer hue of blue.

  • 24 ml Perfumers base (long wear or natural)
  • 6 ml Water
  • Top Notes: 25 drops Bergamot + 10 drops Grapefruit
  • Middle Notes:  12 drops Blue Yarrow + 8 drops Lavender
  • Base Notes: 5 drops Frankincense + 3 drops Cedarwood

How to Make It:

  1. Pour the 24 ml of ethanol directly into your perfume bottle.
  2. Add all the essential oils. Shake well. The high-proof alcohol will dissolve the oils perfectly and turn a beautiful blue.
  3. Slowly add the 6 ml of distilled water. The blend might turn slightly cloudy for a moment—this is normal.

Important for Dry Skins: Because this contains alcohol, spray this strictly on your hair, clothes, or the outer fabric of your jacket rather than directly onto your skin.

Circulatory essential oils: Blue Yarrow vs Helichrysum italicum

Understanding the Difference

Blue Yarrow: The Vascular Toner & Cooling Calmer

  • Tightens and tones: Blue yarrow contains natural astringent molecules. It acts like a supportive brace for sluggish circulation, tightening lax vein walls that have lost their elasticity.
  • Cools the heat: The rich blue chamazulene acts like a splash of cold water on hot, irritated, or throbbing areas.
  • Pore and blemish care: Its gentle astringency helps tighten enlarged pores, balance oily patches, and calm lingering redness once a spot has formed.

Helichrysum: The Bruise Disperser & Skin Rebuilder

  • Clears pooled blood: Helichrysum is rich in Italidiones, unique compounds that help break down trapped, clotted blood under the skin. Instead of tightening a vessel, it encourages the body to clear black-and-blue marks rapidly.
  • Supports micro-capillaries: It works closely with fragile, tiny facial capillaries (like spider veins on cheeks) to rebuild and protect the delicate vascular bed.
  • Skin remodelling: It is the premier choice for smoothing the look of mature scars and encouraging healthy skin turnover.

Which One Should You Choose?

Reach for Blue Yarrow when you have:

  • Heavy, throbbing legs or bulging varicose discomfort after standing on your feet all day.
  • Hot, tender, or red swollen joints after heavy yard work or exercise.
  • Congested, blemish-prone skin with visible redness and enlarged pores that need clarifying astringency.
  • Superficial skin cracks or raw, chapped patches needing a soothing, cooling barrier.

Reach for Helichrysum when you have:

  • A fresh bump, bang, or impact injury that is turning dark purple or black-and-blue.
  • Deep hematomas and swelling from accidental kitchen knocks, DIY bangs, or sports bumps.
  • Fine spider veins on the face (couperose/rosacea) or delicate surface redness around the nose and cheeks.
  • Scars or post-procedure marks where the skin is closed and you want to encourage smooth, supple healing.

When to Combine Both

Because they do not cancel each other out, pairing them 1:1 creates the ultimate circulatory and skin-restoration blend

  • Helichrysum breaks up and clears trapped blood, while Blue Yarrow tones and tightens the vessel walls to prevent further sluggish pooling.
  • Try this synergy: In 30 ml of infused Arnica oil or Tamanu oil, blend 3 drops Blue Yarrow and 3 drops Helichrysum. It makes an exceptional rescue oil for stubborn spider veins, heavy legs, and tender areas after accidental bumps and knocks.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) The Herb vs. its Distilled Essential Oil: A Practical Distinction

Ancient healers and battlefield surgeons across Europe called yarrow Herba MilitarisSoldier's Woundwort, and Staunch weed, packing freshly bruised leaves directly into gashes to halt bleeding on the spot. In clinical phytotherapy, this immediate haemostatic (blood-stopping) action is performed by water-soluble tannins and the alkaloid Achilleine, which mechanically clot surface proteins.

Because steam distillation captures only lipophilic, volatile molecules, heavy tannins and alkaloids remain behind in the distillation water. Therefore, Blue Yarrow essential oil is not a direct clotting agent for actively bleeding cuts—concentrated terpenes should never be placed onto open lacerations. Instead, the distilled oil excels in the essential phases after bleeding has stopped: it helps reduce inflammatory heat (chamazulene), tone lax capillary walls, and encourage fibroblast activity to make healthy collagen and knit tissue together smoothly.

Unlike the essential oil, the Yarrow herb (dry) and its mother tincture (liquid herb) do possess genuine haemostatic and coagulant properties.

CAUTIONS

  • Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to natural ketone conte- α/β-thujone (in traces) and camphor- and emmenagogue actions (stimulating menstrual flow and toning the uterus, uterine smooth muscle stimulation).
  • Not suitable for individuals diagnosed with epilepsy or seizure disorders due to camphor and trace thujone.
  • Do not use on infants or young children under 6 years of age.
  • For external use only; never apply neat or directly onto open, actively bleeding wounds.
  • Individuals with known allergies to the Asteraceae (daisy) family should perform a 24-hour patch test before full use.

Natural Pigment: While diluted blends (under 0.5%) absorb sheerly into the skin without staining, concentrated droplets will stain light fabrics, porous stones, and light plastics.
