Blue Lotus water lily is a gem of an absolute for anyone who likes uplifting flowery aromas. It is used predominantly to create natural perfumes, but its soothing, calming, and uplifting properties have applications in physical and emotional wellbeing. Blue lotus absolute has an incredible, reverberating, rich scent, somewhat reminiscent of Lilies or Hyacinths. The aroma evolves and expresses its different facets throughout the day. This concentrated extract can be overpowering if you were to trust the first whiff coming out of the bottle. To get a true idea of the complexity of this oil, place a drop of this absolute on a tissue paper, or blend just 1 drop in a bit of a carrier oil and come back to throughout the day to assess and witness its evolution.

Please note: While Blue Lotus absolute oil can have a general relaxing effect on body and mind, this extract, used as recommended, DOES NOT HAVE mind-altering properties.  (See more information tab)

About Mind-altering blue lotus

We have found no scientific analysis, nor any studies made using blue waterlily (lotus) absolute showing evidence of mind altering (psychoactive, hypnotics…) reactions, with this absolute oil and its recommended applications (Skin and air applications in Fragrance, cosmetics, and aromatic diffusions).

About Blue (“lotus”) waterlily -The plant.

  • Revered in Ancient Egypt, considered sacred throughout Asia and India, the national flower in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the blue “lotus” is in a fact a water Lily.
  • Celebrated by the French impressionist painter Claude Monet, the Cape water lily as we call it here, beautifully graces our natural South African ponds, riverbanks, or lakes, with its delicate pale bluish flowers, that open in the morning and close at dusk.
  • Gardeners use blue water lily plants to add a romantic touch in water features, big or small.
  • The plant roots, leaves, seeds, and flowers have been used in traditional health systems (Ayurveda, Chinese), in sacred ceremonies and in cooking for thousands of years.
  • Several “Blue lotus” extracts exist on the market that emphasize on the “psychoactive” effects of blue lotus. These are dry material (dry flower petal, seed, seed powders, rootstocks) or concentrated dark sticky types of resins produced to be ingested (teas, drinks) or smoked.
  • 20Th century scientific research into the Nymphaceae family, has identified and isolated molecules that have applications in modern medicine (Aporphine & Nuciferine)
  • Our deliciously fragrant blue water lily flowers absolute has been used to produce luxurious attars and perfumes since ancient times. It is obtained from the fresh cut flowers, when they are starting to open and when the most volatile fragrant molecules (concentrated in the yellow pistil of the flowers) are at their peak (natural mechanism to attract pollinators).
  • The freshness of the flowers is paramount to harvest the best aromatic molecules before they start oxidising.
